2012 saw the third Toon To Town Challenge Ride take place between the 1st and the 5th of May. Covering the now familiar route from Newcastle to Llanelli, the number of riders expanded upon previous years to fifteen riders with two person support team.
The route was longer than 2011, covering in excess of 420 miles. We learned that a few extra miles on quieter roads were far safer and more enjoyable than using the more direct main roads. We were joined on the ride by former Scarlets, Wales and British Lions coach Gareth Jenkins, together with Scarlets and Wales prop Iestyn Thomas and a fellow Scarlet in Vernon Cooper.
During the first leg of the journey, we took the opportunity to visit Help For Heroes Personnel Recovery Centre Phoenix House in Catterick where the riders were fed, rested and treated to a presentation about the services provided at the facility.
Whilst the weather did not play it's part, the ride was well supported all along the route and the group of weary cyclists received a warm Scarlets welcome and a well-earned rest at Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli on the final day of the ride.
