In 2010 Giles Evans lost a good family friend to Cancer. As a keen cycling enthusiast, Giles decided to organise a charity challenge ride with the aim of raising money for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Giles mapped out a route for the ride from Newcastle or 'Toon' to his home town of Llanelli' or 'Town'. The Toon To Town Challenge was born. Giles set out to cover 420 mile route alone and without support, averaging over 80 miles each day. He crossed the finish line at the Parc Y Scarlets in Llanelli five days after leaving Newcastle.

In total, Giles raised £4,750 from the ride and presented a cheque to Lady Elsie Robson, the wife of Sir Bobby.

2010 Ride

The second Toon to Town Challenge Ride took place from Monday 2nd May to Friday 6th May 2011. Five riders supported by Jim Boughen in a support bus left the Angel of the North in bright and breezy conditions and this was the trend for a very enjoyable week.

The group travelled to York, Nottingham, Worcester before hitting their first bit of rain when they arrived on the Welsh border at Hay-on-Wye. The short journey into Brecon meant that the group arrived wet and weary.

The last day from Brecon to Llanelli was in sunshine and the group were joined by Gareth Jenkins, the ex Scarlets,Wales and British Lions coach. His enthusiasm carried the weary riders to Llanelli where a ground collection at Parc Y Scarlets meant that together with personal sponsorship we were able to donate £1750 to the Ray Gravelle and Friends Charitable Trust, which is the official charity of the Scarlets Rugby Club.

The group realised the support by Jim Boughen with the ride team bus and acknowledged the importance of having such a vehicle and someone willing to assist our efforts.

Unfortunately we don't have a cheque presentation for 2011, but it was from this year's Challenge we decided that it could be an annual event. The hospitality shown to us by the Scarlets encouraged more riders to become involved and of course, meant we raised a lot more money the following year.

2011 Ride

The third Toon To Town Challenge Ride took place between the 1st and the 5th of May 2012. Having expanded upon previous years, the ride was completed by fifteen riders, and a two man support team.

The route was longer in 2012, covering in excess of 420 miles cycling (we learned that a few extra miles on quiet roads were far safer and more enjoyable than on the busy roads).

We were joined once again, by Gareth Jenkins Ex Scarlets, Wales and British Lions coach together with Scarlets and Wales prop Iestyn Thomas and a fellow Scarlet in Vernon Cooper.

Whilst the weather did not play it's part the ride was well supported all along the route and the group of weary cyclists received a warm Scarlets welcome and a well-earned rest at the stadium on the final day of the ride.

In addition to the donations received before and during the ride, collection points set up at the game raised funds for the two nominated charities for 2012 (The Iestyn Thomas benefit year and Help for Heroes).

2012 Ride

The group were indebted to Neil Watson from Watson's Timber Limited, of Walker for his support in paying for the fuel for the support van.

We would also like to thank Darren from Mountain Fuel who supplied the energy and recovery powders that are essential on such strenuous events.

Thank you Mountain Fuel Thank you Watson's Timber Limited
