The Toon to Town Challenge is the brainchild of Giles Evans. In 2010 Giles decided to organise a charity ride from Newcastle or 'TOON' to his home town of Llanelli' or 'TOWN'. This solo maiden ride was planned after Giles lost a good family friend to Cancer. The 420 miles were completed over a 5 day period raising money for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

During the same year Tim Mayland had completed a 350 mile charity cycle ride through France in aid of Help for Heroes, called the Big Battlefield Bike ride.

Both Giles and Tim swapped tales and formulated a plan for 2011. This saw a change of route and a total of 5 riders completed the challenge. Each challenge ended at Parc Y Scarlets the home of the Scarlets regional rugby team and funds were raised for their nominated charity the Ray Gravelle and Friends charitable trust.

2012 saw the group expand, through the interest generated by the previous rides and whilst the route was similair to 2011, quieter roads were chosen and this increased the distance but made the journey safer. Whilst the weather did not play it's part the group of 13 arrived safely after 5 days of hard cycling at Parc y Scarlets , Llanelli on Saturday May 5th and over £22,500 was raised for their nominated charity of Help for Heroes.

The Toon To Town Group is expanding further and with nearly £30,000 in total raised for very worthy causes and our aim is to try and raise £100,000 by the end of 2015. The group believe that this is achievable and will continue to complete annual cycling challenges for worthy charitable causes with the ethos of enjoyment, the physical challenge that is brought by cycling for so long and over so many days and with the main aim of raising as much money for charity as the group can.

In 2013 the group will be cycling from The Angel Islington London to The Angel of The North Newcastle, from 8th to 15th September, a change from the original route but with the same aim to raise as much money as we can for worthy charities.
